100% Clean Electricity by 2018

On July 17, 2008 Al Gore challenged America to produce 100% of our electricity from energy sources with zero carbon emissions - and to do so within 10 years.

Green Power Choices

Electricity generated from renewable energy resources with low environmental impact can be purchased in Santa Monica:

  1. Renewable Energy Credits - individuals and organizations can buy rights to renewable electricity generated on their behalf. Credits can be purchased for your home or business from certified retailers at rates ranging from $0.005/kWh to $0.03/kWh or more. Renewable energy credits (REC's) can also be given as gifts.
  2. On-site Generation - federal, state, and local funding is available for installing on-site solar panels, wind turbines, and fuel cells. Solar electricity is often cheaper than conventional electricity and offers a predictable fixed price over the life of the system.

Green Power Purchasing Benefits

The electricity you purchase can be a major source of air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. Buying green power can help:

  • Reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions
  • Avoid future electricity price increases
  • Generate customer and employee pride and positive publicity
  • Demonstrate civic leadership
